The Screenface Ones

The Screenface Ones imagines that our ‘real life’ identity, our ‘true self’ is supplanted by an alternative ‘virtual version’ of ourselves. We endeavour to present ourselves in the real world according to certain personal preferences and norms but can we ever be sure that others see us as we would wish to be seen? The Screenface Ones suggests that we can subtly or extravagantly alter our presence in the virtual world in ways that we cannot in earthly three dimensions. The collection of images provokes such questions  as; how might Screenfaces impact upon interpersonal relationships? How might Screenfaces influence collective perceptions of identity and what do they tell us about the psychological importance of self image?

Work from the series is featured in Michael Petry‘s book ‘MirrorMirror, the Reflective Surface in Contemporary Art’, Thames & Hudson November 2024.
